We’re featuring some of Toronto’s finest dogs. Milton’s tale is an example of just how important community can be when faced with challenges. Rescue organizations, dog walking companies, training group classes – Milton’s done it all and charmed us in the process.
Read on to hear all about it from the perspective of his fabulous owners, Carrie-Ann & Stephen.
We knew we wanted a rescue from the get go.
We have been fortunate enough to grow up with dogs and had always planned to have a dog of our own when the time was right. That time came in October 2014! So we went to visit this perfect dog we had seen on the Toronto Humane Society (THS)’s website. Turns out that particular rescue had known separation issues and would not be ideal in a condo – apparently people are not a fan of dogs barking for hours on end 😉 – but they just had a dog come to them from Quebec who they thought would be great for us.
And so we were introduced to Milton.
Standing in his caged area, he looked up at us with those bright, intelligent eyes and our hearts melted. Milton still needed to be cleared and we were told to check on their website in a few days when he would become available for adoption. The day he became available I must have driven THS crazy as I kept calling to check he hadn’t been adopted out yet. As soon as we could finish work we bolted to the shelter. 3 hours later we were leaving with our Milton!
I would be lying if I said the last 4 years with Milton have been easy.
It quickly became apparent that Milton had reactivity issues on leash and was extremely wary of new people. We had many moments where we wondered what we had gotten ourselves into. Initially we didn’t know how to handle his reactivity (and we didn’t even know what it was!). Sometimes, when we were walking and he saw another dog he’d turn around and take it out on us. Not biting us – he was never dangerous – but chomping the leash. He’s pretty strong too. I won’t lie, sometimes I was close to tears with the frustration of it all. The worst part was that he was so great at home! Loving, gentle, playful. Just the happiest dog.
That’s where finding the Toronto Centre for Canine Education (TCCE) made such a difference. Thanks to their Cranky Canine course, walks became so much better for us – and the ‘cranky community’ are the best group of people. TCCE also referred us to Walk My Dog Toronto. Milton loves his dog walking community and he gets so excited to walk with his current bestie, Noel!
It turns out that while we were filling out the adoption forms at THS, a different couple came in to adopt him too – we only got there about 5 minutes before them. I sometimes wonder what life would have been like for Milton if they had got there first. Would he have a better life? Would he be happier?
All I know for sure is our lives – and our community – would have been much poorer without Milton coming to the rescue.
