It’s that sweaty time of year again, so here are some tips to make your summer bearable (or should I say dog-able?).
Dogs don’t have the freedom to change out of their fur and into cute crop tops and short shorts, but summer is a great time for a new look. Use a simple, breathable harness and get your single-coated dog a haircut! If your dog has a double coat, leave that fur alone. It may look overly hairy, but all that fur actually helps regulate their body temperature, so shaving can do more harm than good.
Go out for walks during the cooler parts of the day and avoid the heat of the afternoon. If that’s not possible, stick to the shade and grassy areas. Test the pavement with your palm to check if it is too hot for your dog’s paws!
Wipe paws with a wet towel to help the cool-down process. Make sure that your pup’s bowl is always filled with fresh water. Add a couple of ice cubes if you want, or freeze some fruit for a yummy treat! Pro tip: freeze a banana and then blend it for an easy, healthy, and dairy-free ice cream (for you and your pup).
If your home does not have air conditioning, keep your windows open for air circulation. When in doubt, get a portable or window air conditioner, or keep a fan running. Another option is to get a cooling mat and teach your dog to lay on it to “chill” out.
What other helpful tips and tricks do you have for keeping cool in the heat and humidity?
