Celeste Gillis is a Toronto-born artist who specializes in charcoal pet portraits. Having lived in the Beaches and High Park, she can truly say she loves all of Toronto, and gets inspired by the abundance of cuddly friends all around. She studied Fine Arts in university and drew her first portrait in the late 90s as a gift for her parents. Her business took off after networking with like-minded people and she started up her website www.charcoalpetportraits.com. She describes her clientele as “warm, interesting people who share my love for art and animals.”
Drawing pets is surprisingly emotional and people-involved. Celeste gets commissioned portraits for animals at all stages of life, from puppies to those who have recently passed. It’s an involved and detailed process that can often end in a teary hug.
When asked what might be challenging about her line of work, Celeste shares an example of a client who commissioned her to draw four Westies. One had passed before the owner could get a picture of all of them together, so Celeste drew a portrait with the four together and each of their individual personalities shining through.
Although it may seem an unusual specialty, all pet owners understand how much love and joy pets can offer on a daily basis, and the impact they can have on life and family. Celeste focuses on pet portraits because she gets to make people happy.
